Isomo Scholars Make Their Mark Across Continents Through Summer Internships

Evelyne Umubyeyi, Wellesley College

She is spending the summer in the U.S. researching Histone-Derived Antimicrobial Peptides as part of the Science Center Summer Research Program. She’s modeling their interaction with bacterial membranes to help find solutions to antibiotic resistance, a growing global health threat. Through this work, she’s using her biochemistry background to contribute to future therapeutic breakthroughs.

Philippe Niyitegeka, African Leadership University

Philippe is a Full-Stack Developer Intern at SOLVIT Africa, building web apps like SomaExpress and platforms that support learning and access. His stack includes React, Next.js, and Node.js, and he’s learning to thrive in a collaborative, mission-driven tech environment. With no coding background when he started, his self-taught journey now fuels his vision of transforming education through tech.

Deborah Mukeshimana, Abilene Christian University

Deborah is interning at Ernst & Young, where she’s gaining hands-on experience in tax and audit. She’s sharpening her skills in data analytics, Excel, and cybersecurity, while learning the importance of adaptability and networking. This experience is helping her better understand the accounting profession and where she fits within it.

Elie Ntakirutimana, Cornell University

Elie is interning with the Tata-Cornell Institute in India, working on the “Zero Hunger, Zero Carbon” project focused on agrivoltaics—combining solar energy with agriculture. He’s analyzing global policies and engaging with farmers, researchers, and policymakers to promote sustainable food systems. This experience is giving him new tools to bridge technical expertise with real-world impact—especially in African contexts.

Isomo Scholars Intern at Imagine We This Summer

This summer, several Isomo Scholars completed internships with Imagine We Rwanda—gaining hands-on experience learning alongside professionals, building networks, and sharpening their skills for the future. Founded in 2015, Imagine We Rwanda is dedicated to transforming the reading culture among children and youth by giving voice to young authors and sharing their stories with the world.
